NCAA 2006
Okay, initial thoughts:
Graphically it is marginally better than last year, which means that it looks good but not as good as ESPN. The animations are significantly better though, with a much greater variety and more realistic movements.
The running game is improved, though inside running still suffers some from the 'run into the back of your lineman and then run in place' syndrome that all EA football games have. Outside running is good, especially if you have a big, bruising back. Adrian Peterson shook off cornerbacks like rain off a duck. In one game, a CB tried to tackle him high and I dragged him nine yards into the end zone. It was quite delightful.
The passing game is dramatically improved by the moving of Sprint to the A (Xbox)/X (PS2) button. The fact that the passing icons never have to be brought up makes bootlegging a viable play now. It also makes me fear Vince Young/Brad Smith/Marcus Vick/Omar Jacobs/etc. The Option Pass is now truly a thing to be feared in the hands of a capable player. As for drop back passing, it is basically the same as it has been for the past several years. Vertical passing is still easier than crossing routes (against zones).
On defense, zone coverages are still overly smothering. I got used to the fact that in ESPN you had holes in zones. In NCAA, the reason crossing routes are hard is because of the effectiveness of zones. Blitzing is effective, as it should be.
It does a good job capturing the difference in talent levels at schools. Some schools are rich with talent and depth. Some schools only have one or two good players. This becomes evident as you play.
Race for the Heisman mode is very cool, but I think of it as kind of 'Dynasty-lite'. Of course, I might also be biased because my Pocket QB got offered scholarships to USC, FSU, and VT. There are dozens of write-ups on the RFTH mode, so I won't go into to much detail.
Dynasty mode is improved with the addition of in-season recruiting. I always loved recruiting in NCAA, and making it a weekly addition is fantastic. I'll have more as I play through the Dynasty a little more.
EA Trax needs to be muted.
Odd thing...even with the names for the players, I didn't hear Nessler calling out names as much. Maybe I just missed it, but I didn't hear names as often as I recall from previous years.
Online is smooth as silk. Typical experience: Halftime - OU 34, Opponent<6 = Request for friendly quit.
Boomer Sooner baby.
